On 19 July 2009 the Remetea sports center, built with nearly €1 million in government support was officially opened. Since then the much-needed facility has been almost continuously in use: mornings and afternoons it is used mainly by schoolchildren, while the pitch is taken over by adults from late afternoon onward. Since the hall opened, local mini-football and handball have flourished, table tennis activity has increased, and women as well as men and children have begun to take part in regular sport.
An outdoor artificial-turf pitch has further enriched the local sporting life. The new sports infrastructure created new opportunities for every age group who want to exercise or play sport. On average about 120 people use the facility each week. The hall can host championships and tournaments in handball, football, karate and judo at local, district, county and national levels. The surroundings were improved with the installation of an artificial turf outdoor pitch and a playground.
The sports center hosts several important annual events and programmes, for example:
- Futsal championships: “Village Districts Cup”, “Family Names Tournament”, “Age-Groups Championship”
- School competitions (local, district and county stages) in handball and indoor football
- Table tennis and tennis events
In cooperation with the Kereszthegy Sports Association the following are organised:
- Futsal Championships - autumn and spring rounds with many local and regional teams. In 2015 the fourth edition of this competition was held; the very first tournament featured only teams from Remetea.
- Judo Remetea Cup - for two years the Remetea Cup has been organised in the martial art of judo, attracting nearly 200 competitors. The association also supports Remetea judo athletes’ participation by covering transport costs from a municipal grant. In 2014 three athletes reached the national finals and one girl finished third.
- Training of Kereszthegy’s adult handball team - the team has competed in county and zonal championships and has been active for 12 years.
